Thomas Sæverud - Det som skinner

What shines is not the light itself, but what reflects it. A moment of movement on a water surface, a current, a swirl, a glimpse of something that both arises and disappears.

Thomas Sæverud at Gallery Haaken

In these paintings, which are based on snapshots taken of the current and shadows from trees in the Akerselva River, Sæverud explores how light, movement and form can mirror the physical laws of nature without depicting them.

The painting process turns this into a story about nature's unstable patterns that can be read as visual structures in constant change. Movement becomes form, and form dissolves back into movement.

Through titles such as Tectonic, Convection, Fossil and Betelgeuse, an associative space is opened between the geological depths of the earth and the astronomical distances of the universe. The motifs evade scale and context, and move in a field where scale and perception flow into each other.
