Birds of Paradise, wrestling and boybands
In Birds of Paradise, Finnish choreographer Tiia Kasurinen explores how identity is shaped, performed, and perceived. Through exaggerated courtship rituals and performative power games, attention is drawn to questions of gender, masculinity, body ideals, and hierarchies.
Costumes by Leevi Ikäheimo reinforce the performance’s play on expectations regarding the body and gender. The result is a physical, richly detailed, and visually charged experience where humor, vulnerability, and staging coexist.
Birds of Paradise had a pilot showing as a finalist at Danse Élargie in Paris in 2024 and premiered at the Helsinki City Theatre in 2026.
